Lesniowsky, Joseph [Yosyf Lisniovskyi, Йосиф Лісньовський] – leading figure in the Manchester Ukrainian community in the first half of the 20th century; born on 31 December 1895 in the village of Bilyi Kamin, Zolochiv county, Austrian crown land of Galicia (now Zolochiv raion, Lviv oblast, Ukraine); died on 5 August 1971 in Manchester, England; buried in St Joseph’s Cemetery, Moston, Manchester.
Lesniowsky came to the United Kingdom in 1910 as part of the “first wave” of migration from Ukraine and settled in Manchester, where he became the leading organiser of the pre-war local Ukrainian community. In 1919 he helped to found the Samopomich society and became its chairman. In 1929 he established a Ukrainian Social Club in Manchester and for many years was its chairman or secretary. In 1945 he became a member of the initial executive of the Ukrainian Relief Committee in Great Britain and subsequently became its chairman.
